How to become a blind audition coach in Hollywood
By GREG SMITH, Associated Press”I’ve done a lot of blind auditions,” said David A. Miller, who has coached more than 400 blind and visually impaired students.
Miller, who is blind, has worked with the likes of Sandra Bullock, Kate Winslet, and Amy Adams, and he’s also been recognized as a blind actor in “The Blind Side.”
“They are extremely motivated to learn,” Miller said.
“You know, it’s not like the other jobs I’ve had, where you just come up with a job and you don’t really know what you’re going to do with it,” Miller added.
“You get a job, you learn the job, and then it’s just sort of a matter of you have a job.
I’m a little bit more confident now.”
Miller’s career has spanned over 20 years.
He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, and is now a licensed blind-spectrum coach.
He said he is one of the few in Texas with a full-time job.
Miller has taught about 80 blind and disabled students, including about 10 of his own students.
The number of blind and visual-impaired people who have jobs is increasing, but Miller said the industry has a lot more work to do to make it more accessible.
He hopes his teaching style will encourage blind people to pursue careers in auditions.
“It’s really important to get that right, so they’re not going to feel like they have no choice but to go for the job,” Miller told The Associated Press.
Miller said he wants to encourage people to do more than just enroll in classes.
He also said he’d like to offer the profession an outlet to find out more about what it’s like to be blind.
“I think it’s really interesting, because you get a lot out of being blind, especially the way they talk to you,” Miller explained.
“If you’re blind, they’re going look at you like you’re crazy, so you have to really know how to communicate with them.”
He also said it’s important to be aware of how people in the industry are treated.
“If you don, you don,” Miller stressed.
“It’s a good idea to just be respectful.”
Miller said if he can help a blind student get the confidence to apply for a job in audition, he’d be happy to.
He’s also willing to teach blind auditors about how to become better, he said.
